Rocks

I have asked my grandson to solve a mystery for me. I would like him to figure out why rocks are so beautiful?.

Now I live in Utah, the land of rocks so I may be a little biased , but seriously they are amazing. Crystals, geodes, Navajo sandstone, iron pyrite, magnetite, red rock mountains in the morning, red rock mountains at twilight. The list is almost endless and it begins and ends in beauty.

Now if this were based on evolution it might make sense but obviously since rocks don’t need to attract a mate it is not. Can you imagine the pick up line of an amethyst.

There is a reason so many young (and old) humans become rock hounds. The uncluttered mind sees what others might be missing. Beauty, magic, wonder all captuered in the refractions of a crystal. The fact is a tiger eye is magic and we all know it.

So if the universe was just a random event why would rocks be so amazing. Dreary dusty brown would do the trick. Why the diversity and dazzling beauty. Why this straight path to our hearts and our souls? Why does an emerald draw us so deeply into its mesmerizing allure?

No my friend you can say it was all random chance but I say otherwise and so does my humble friend the rose quartz.

Mona Lisa did not just happen and neither did David or Starry Starry night. They were the product of a creative genius that we cannot begin to fathom. And they were created to inspire, to touch us deeply, to make us see and feel and know that life is an amazing gift. I give you rocks.
