When I picked the phrase Lost in America maybe I should have picked America is Lost. As I said in my Ye-ikes post I do not know what is wrong with this country.
We are living in a golden age. Our prosperity is astounding. Our medical care is a veritable cornucopia of miracles that would astonish our ancestors. We are at peace. Right after World War 2 one indicia of prosperity was owning a toaster. How quaint. Now we own devices that fit in our pocket and allow us to talk to anyone in the world. We can use this device to check the weather ,buy things ,look up scientific or historic facts, or make investments. And did I mention it fits in our pocket. But are we happy?
Hell no. We are miserable and angry. One source of our anger and hostility is the fact that we have divided into two distinct factions and large numbers of one faction hate the other. Throughout history nations have often been divided into hostile factions but this does not match any of those historical precedents. As an example the Irish were divided by fundamental differences most particularly religion.
Our factions have no such clear delineations. In fact you can’t easily differentiate these factions based upon appearance. Thanks to the great melting pot we are all mutts and we look like each other. But boy if your mascot is a donkey and mine is an elephant look out. This means we are mortal enemies. This divide has gotten so severe some people fear a civil war. Seriously.
The divide permeates our culture and contributes greatly to the anger and unhappy state of our world.
As I said at the end of my Ye-ikes post Bucky and I have a quest to find a path to a land of peace and tranquility. I know we can find it. I just have to figure out how to start. I guess like Frodo we must start by venturing forth into these hostile domains. We don’t have a ring but we do have hope and determination. Wish us well. We will keep you posted on our progress.
